HDR Quality of Life in South Asia
data visualization
educational project
story
This data visualization poster narrates one of the key findings of the Human Development Report (conducted by the United Nations) for the countries in South Asia: Quality, not just quantity of human development, is important, and it reveals large deficits.
questions to consider:
1. How is the quality of life in South Asia compared to highest ranked country (Norway) and the lowest ranked country (Niger)?
2. Does a country's HDI reflect the quality of life in that country?
3. Do we have an accurate idea or a stereotypical concept of the living conditions in South Asian countries?
Four components were used to define quality of life: health, education, employment, and standard of living.
In organizing data and exploring different graphs, the most important considerations were story-telling, effectiveness, and legibility.
sketches
Groups of different categories, a limited color palette, a grid system, and negative space were utilized to prevent the visualization from being visually overwhelming or difficult to read. Rather, the specific layout and organization were intended to guide the viewer through each data and category to make sense of the narrative as a whole.
